WELCOME TO THE LANGUAGE UNIT

Class Teacher:
Speech Therapist: Ms. Colette Roche
The Language Unit is a class attached to Barryroe National School.  It is the only unit of its kind in West Cork and serves all of West Cork.  As part of the placement, Pupils qualify for transport to and from the class.  All our Pupils have English as their first language but have a diagnosis of Specific Speech and Language Impairment.  We work like a mainstream class and cover all curricular areas.  We tailor our language and activities to suit the language abilities of our pupils.  We have a Speech Therapist three mornings a week.  She combines group and individual sessions to meet each Childs needs.  When needed, we have support from West Cork Child Development Services (WCCDS).  Our Pupils are fully integrated in the daily life of the school and take part in all school activities e.g. school tours, visiting speakers and P.E. activities.  Our class is also unique in that it has a maximum of 7 pupils at any one time.  This allows for a more tailored and focused educational and language experience.  The maximum duration of a placement is two years with a yearly review of progress and placement.  Regular progress meetings are also held with Parents and Guardians

CORK SIMON BAKE SALE

Our school held a bake sale for Cork Simon Community.  We brought in our money.  We bought lots of yummy cakes.  We ate our cakes at lunch time. Yummy!

ACTIVE SCHOOLS

We took part in the active schools week.  We got to do lots of exercise.  We have movement breaks in class and took part in a circuit activity.  We also did the perimeter challenge.  We had lots of fun.

GOATS

We got to meet some baby goats.  A baby goat is called a kid.  The goats were very friendly.

A VERY BUSY DAY

We had a very busy day today.  First we planted some peas.  We planted them in old painted tyres.  We put compost in the tyres.  Next we put the seeds in the compost.  After that we watered them.  We planted some mini yoghurt pots with peas too.  We can't wait to watch them grow.

We also went to visit a local farm.  Gavins Uncle is the farmer.  We saw the baby calves and we saw the bull.  We had an Easter Egg hunt!  The farmer showed us where the cows are milked.  He showed us how he feeds the calves.  We saw the bluebells and flowers.  The farmer reminded us to stay away from a Mammy cow and her calf.  He also reminded us not to climb on bales or run away on the farm.  This will keep us safe.  He showed us what the milk could make.  He gave us some cheese and chocolate to taste!  We really enjoyed our trip to the farm.

ROAD SAFETY

We are currently learning to cross the road in a safe way.  We are learning the safe cross code to help us remember.  Don't forget to look for resources on our class resource page!

REMEMBERING!

We are working on our memory skills at the moment.  We are learning and remembering new words.  We must remember three important things about each word and item we learn.

What do we do with it?

Where do we find it?

What group does it belong to?

We are also working on remembering our address and birthday.

GOOD LUCK IN RIO PATRICK!

See our video message to Patrick O'Leary below.  He is canoeing in the Olympics in Rio.  We hope he does well.

INTEGRATION AND INCLUSION
WITH SENIOR INFANTS

FIRST DAY 2016

We were delighted to welcome everyone back to the Language Unit today.  We were excited to welcome three new friends to our class and say 'hello again' to everyone else.  Our class now has a mix of Junior and Senior Infants.

We had a great first day :-)

We got to play games, learn each others name, play in the big yard and listen to a story.  We learned a poem about our 'First Day' in school.  We also got to draw a picture of our favourite thing and show off our awesome counting skills.  We will post pictures of our first day over the next few days.  Keep checking back during the year to see all the fun things we get up to!
